Nominal Value

Value of a bond, note, mortgage or other security given on the certificate or instrument. The nominal value of a share is shown in a company's Memorandum and Articles of Association.

Nominee Account

With the introduction of CREST in 1996, a new settlement system for the buying and selling of shares, transactions can be settled electronically. This is quicker and cheaper than issuing paper share certificates. If you use a nominee service, your shares are held in the nominee company's name. You remain the beneficial owner of the shares and are eligible for compensation in the same way you would be if they were held in your own name. This also enables the nominee service to deal with all the administrative paperwork on your behalf.

Nominee Company

A company formed by a bank or other organisation for the purpose of holding shares on behalf of the beneficial owner. Nominee company employees carry out all the paperwork and other chores associated with the documentation of shareholding and arrange for necessary transfers when a share is sold.
